Isle Target Sports Club

OPENDAY AUGUST 10th 2008

Today we held our open day for the general public and guests. Luckily the weather held good for most of the day apart from one flurry of rain which lasted all of 5 minutes. We must apologize for the lack of more pictures as our webmaster unfortunately dropped her main camera which promptly ceased to work. Luckily she had a backup and was able to take the pictures as shown. We had a good turnout of club members and guests who were invited to take a turn at shooting various guns, pistols, rifles, flintlock muskets and such like. The main shooting area was packed to capacity and was busy all day. We were well catered for by a BBQ which supplied us with Burger, Hotdogs and drinks. Our main attraction was a display of Musket drill by the 13th Alabama American Civil War troop as well as a display of 1861 medical skills ably demonstrated by the field Surgeon who talked us through the medical procedures which were in use during the conflict. By all accounts many combatants were lost due to poor hygiene due to a lack of knowledge in those days. Another popular attraction was a Clay Pigeon shooting competition held by Geoff. Airgunners were also very busy on their part of the range with many people having a go. All in all a very successful day of fun was had by all.

Shot in the hand and not very happy

The field Surgeon describes the various medical procedures.

The troop demonstrates loading and fireing their Muskets.

This trooper had to load and fire 3 shots within a minute - done with two seconds to spare.

A demonstration of how to load and fire laying down - very hard to do by the way.

A very busy fireing line

This young lad was eager to shoot a Flintlock Pistol - boy, was he surprised when it went off!

Part of the joy of shooting is loading and fireing a black powder revolver - not quick by any means as you have to fill with powder, ram a wad and bullet home plus the percussion cap. Great fun though, especially if you manage to hit the target.
